Learn with Dr Jane Rooney on the contemporary evidence-informed assessment and management of commonly presenting acute and chronic knee conditions including the pathophysiology, clinical features and typical presenting impairments. Specifically, participants of the highly practical workshop will:
- Learn advanced practical skills of assessment to differentially diagnose acute knee conditions including patellofemoral pain and instability, ACL/ PCL / MCL / LCL ligament injuries, acute meniscal / chondral pathology presentations, patella tendinopathy and acute exacerbation of knee osteoarthritis. Review red flags and indications for imaging and specialist referral.
- Use advanced practical skills of assessment to differentially diagnose chronic knee conditions and assess accompanying impairments including patellofemoral and tibiofemoral osteoarthritis, meniscal / chondral pathology and referred pain presentations
- Understand contemporary best practice management for commonly presenting acute knee conditions including ACL and other ligament injuries, patella instability and patellofemoral pain, meniscal and chondral injury and patella tendinopathy
- Understand contemporary best practice management for commonly presenting chronic knee conditions including patellofemoral and tibiofemoral osteoarthritis, and meniscal / chondral pathology.
- Apply advanced assessment of the lower limb impairments including the kinetic chain and understand the contribution to commonly presenting knee conditions
- Apply appropriate acute, early-stage and mid stage rehabilitation techniques including muscle activation techniques, neuromuscular control progressions, strength development strategies
- Understand criteria based mid and late stage rehabilitation including functional and neuromuscular control progressions, and strengthening and power development strategies including return to sport testing
- Develop proficiency applying practical management skills including taping, soft tissue techniques and joint mobilisations.
- To identify strategies for patients to self- manage, including load and symptom management education to assist function , control pain and prevent recurrence where possible
- To understand the long-term outcomes for commonly presenting knee conditions
